Our Halloween Birthday Party

My daughter's birthday is the first week of November, but this year she really wanted to have a Halloween birthday party, so she did! We celebrated with cake and ice cream at home and opened gifts (which she hasn't put down since her party this last weekend). Then we hopped into the car and went to Johansen Farms to celebrate. My did we ever have fun, and the weather was chilly, but perfect!

Instead of using party hats, we used witches hats. She also picked out the colors and design of her custom cake and it was scrumptious!

First we held baby chicks. This was so cool! They're so tiny!

We went through a corn maze and petting zoo....

And of course we couldn't leave out the bouncers, slides and train rides {my son's personal favorite}!

Can't forget the pony rides..... This was a real hit!

And before we left we went through the pumpkin patch and picked out pumpkins for everyone to take home and decorate.

Swine Flu Vaccinations & Horrifying Statistics for This Flu Season

I had heard that the Swine Flu was going to hit us pretty hard this year, but these numbers are down right frightening! We neeeed the vaccinations now, and I hope that anyone of any age can take them. Apparently the vaccination will be a series of two shots spread 3 weeks apart. If you don't follow through with the second shot, you're not protected. They also said that this flu is effecting young adults and children more so than other age groups. This really worries me because we can't be with our children 24/7 to make sure that they're fully protected and washing their hands and sanitizing throughout the school day. An Update to my previous post, another child had passed away in about 4 days as well after contracting the Swine Flu and the autopsy showed that she in fact did not have an underlying condition.

Up to half of the population of the U.S. could come down with the swine flu and 90,000 could die this season, according to a dire report from the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.

The report, which claims as many as 1.8 million people could end up in the hospital seeking treatment for the H1N1 virus, comes as government officials push drug companies to make a vaccine available next month.

"It's a plausible scenario that we need to be prepared for," said Marty Cetron, the Center for Disease Control's director of the Division of Global Migration and Quarantine.

The report says that under a worst-case scenario, between 60 and 120 million Americans could get sick with the swine flu and another 30 million could contract the virus but not show symptoms. Between 30,000 and 90,000 could die -- more than twice the annual average of deaths associated with the seasonal flu.

5-Year-Old Max Gomez Dies From the Swine Flu in Just 4 Days

I can not stop thinking about this boy's parents and what they must be going through right now. Our family is just getting back on our feet after having the flu for the last two weeks, and it had me on pins and needles the entire time. The swine flu is always in the back of our minds.

Little Max had just started Kindergarten and had gone on a Church fieldtrip to the zoo on Friday. That is when he first started to show signs of being sick. By Saturday he had a temperature of 102, not alarming, but enough to make you concerned. Surprisingly, the next day he was fine again showing signs of improvement and the fever had actually gone away, but to be safe, his parents kept him home from church. Monday came around and he had the fever back but this time with chills so his parents took him to the hospital where he died just three hours later. In a matter of 4 days Max went from being perfectly healthy to going to heaven. This is unimaginable to me, and so very frightening. My heart goes out to the Gomez family. May God give them strength.

Our schools and local news media are really hyping up this years' flu season to be at an all time high, in particular, with the Swine Flu. Everyone in our family washes their hands when we come home from public places, and sanitize directly after washing, but this is still not enough to protect ourselves from contracting the virus ~ and that is scary!

Of the 36 children who have died so far of the H1N1 virus, two-thirds have had some underlying medical condition that made them more susceptible to the virus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But until Max fell ill that weekend, he was a perfectly a healthy child. An autopsy will be performed to see if Max also had an underlying condition such as asthma for example. If nothing is found, then Max's death will certainly raise many questions.

On a final note there was one factor that Max's mom had mentioned that raised a few brow's with doctor's, and that is the fact that Max had a fever twice during his illness. He had a fever on Saturday, it was gone by Sunday, and had returned by Monday. Doctor's feel that this might be a key factor in determining if it is a specific symptom of the Swine Flu. I'm definitely going to keep my sponge bob thermometer next to my kids when their sick this flu season.

Michael went to the hospital today.....

Michael is doing so much better now. This afternoon he just started screaming and crying in pain "my eye! my eye!" His eye was swelling and turning red... He was holding a new Firebelly Frog that we had picked up at the store the night before so I didn't know if he held the frog to close to his eye, or what.... I began washing out his eye for the next 5 minutes with water but he complained that the pain was getting worse. I didn't have saline solution so the only thing I could do was take him to the E.R. They put an orange dye in his eye to look for an abrasion but didn't find any, so the Dr. concluded that he just had a bad reaction to the frog. Apparently Michael had rubbed his eye when he was playing with the frog because he was tired, and whatever was on the frog got into his eye. Thank God he is fine and his vision is back to normal. We have to give him antibiotic eye drops three times a day to avoid any bacterial infection from happening, but he deals with those pretty well. I'm so glad things are ok and back to normal. We still wash our hands after handling the frog. Poor little guy......

I think these two are going to be best buddies growing up together....

I can't believe that I'm a mom of a teeeenager!

Our oldest daughter just turned 13 a week ago and I'm still trying to come to terms with it. How could I be a mom of a teenager? I feel to young to be a mom of a 13 year old. She is growing so fast, and now that I'm older, the words my mother said to me over and over ring true...."time goes by so fast". She and my other two children have been such a blessing. Having been pregnant 8 times, I have three beautiful miracles that I can call my own, and enjoy watching them grow each day. They leave their heart-print with me every single day and I treasure every momment that I can with them because tomorrow is another day. Before I know it one of them is a year older...and life keeps trucking along without a bleep. I guess that's why I spoil them so much. (Sorry Dan!) This year being a 'big' birthday, we gave Taylor two parties. The first one was just with our family, and the other was with her friends. Below are pictures of our family party in a fairy theme. (We so love faries in our house!)

The girls were so inspired to put their glittery fairy wings on and I love it! I'm so glad that Taylor can do this at the age of 13...well, at least for her party. She's growing up sooo fast!

Maggie even came in to join us!

The party that she had with her friends was a Hawaiian Spa Birthday Party. They did manicures, pedicures, facials, curled their hair, experimented with makeup, temporary tattoos, you name it! A pinata was in the works while the pizza was arriving, and a scrumptious cookies-n-cream ice cream cake was for dessert. Yummy!

It is sooooo cold today and it's August 29th! We were sliding down dry and opted not to place the regular pool that normally attaches to the end because we didn't want to freeze to death, but after awhile, the kids wanted water, so wala...we used our pool and the hose and they're having a blast! Now....if the sun can just come out for awhile and warm us up!

We have a new addition to our family!

She's a German Shepherd, about 10 weeks old, and her name is Maggie. She is cute as ever and a ball of energy! We just love her!

Any advise is GREATLY appreciated on every subject.

One question that comes to mind.....how do I get her to stop chasing and rough housing with my two cats?? Yikes! I try to get her to sit and tell her "no cats" but so far, no luck. :-( Will her chasing end as she gets older?

I am currently away from my studio with no access to e-mail. My husband secretly packed our bags and told me that we're leaving for vacation tonight. Wow! This is a total and complete surprise but I have to say that I'm really looking forward to seeing where we're going. I think he knew this would be the only way to get me away from painting and spend quality time with the family.

I will be returning next week so please hold tight for me until next weekend so that I have time to come back home and go through my emails. This will not effect posts on my blog so please feel free to comment on here all you wish! :-) I'll share my vacation pictures with you when I return. Can't wait!

It was about 7:00pm tonight when I was getting ready to leave the house to run an errand and I began to see a twister form in the sky. I couldn't believe what I was seeing so I ran in the house to grab my camera. By the time I came back out I couldn't see the twister anymore because of the roof tops, but I did get some other beautiful images of the storm that was coming in. Lots of thunder and lightening....but it was a beautiful storm nonetheless! These images have not been enhanced at all. This is really how the clouds looked! There was quite a contrast. Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince is coming out July 15th!

I had started reading the Harry Potter books years ago when they first came out. It was my escape late at night when everyone was down, the night was coming to an end, and I needed to forget all about work. The books were fun to read and I had always looked forward to reading the next book that would come out. When I heard that they were making movies of the series I was thrilled, except that once I saw the first Harry Potter movie it was a little 'hoaky'. Each movie got a little bit better and became more interesting to watch (almost as interesting as the books). Now Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince is coming out July 15th and I can't wait to see it! The preview of the movie is amazing! You can click any image blow to enlarge it. My daughter is jazzed about seeing it with her friends.

What a storm we had!

We had the worst storm of the season tonight. Well, actually, the last two days have been the worst. The sky was near black tonight and the winds were fierce reaching up to 70 mph. I had wondered a couple of times after looking out of the window if a tornado was approaching. All of our trees were sideways (thank God none of them broke like many other homes), I could hear the house creaking, and you can see people's tables, chairs, BBQ's and other personal belongings either falling over or blowing down the street. I have never seen a storm this bad before here, nor have I seen so many bad storms in a 48 hour period before. I'm so glad that it's over. I hear that another storm is coming Sunday so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it's nothing like the last coupe of days. Anyway, just as the storm was passing, we looked outside once again and couldn't believe the most beautiful sunset peaking out below the covered skies. What a nice ending to such a stressful storm. This is a small reminder to finally clean out my basement as tornado season is fast approaching! Yikes!

Believe it or not this pic has not been altered, this is from a February 2007 Washington Post article. Apparently this massive bunny is from a small town in eastern German. This rabbit weighs in at 23 pounds!!!

This is a real picture as well! The name of the cow is Chili and she stands an impressive 6-1/2' tall! I guess there is something in the water in London, England!

I'd love to have your opinion.

I had been waiting so long for the opportunity to paint a cross because there are so many things that you can do with them. I was doing an order for a client of mine and I happened to find out that their son was being Baptized this weekend so I surprised them with a gift, the above cross. I had found the unfinished wooden cross at a local store and wondered if it was to feminine to use for a baby boy because of the curves and flower looking medallion in the center. Since it was my only option if I were to paint a cross I decided to place it in my cart and take it home to think about ideas and what I could do with it to make it more fitting for a boy. Since I was working with a nautical theme the best idea that I had was to use the center medallion as a compass. The carving on the medallion was really bumpy so it was hard to keep my lines straight, but overall I think it turned out ok. If there weren't so many curves to the cross I would have painted the "Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep" prayer along the edges. Darn.... So, I painted a little boy praying with a nautical scene. I almost painted thick stripes on the sides but wasn't sure if it would have taken away from the artwork on the front.... hmmm... The size of the cross is about 11"h x 9"w or so.

I would really like to have your opinions since I may be painting another cross like this one. My questions are:

1. Does the cross shape and medallion just look to feminine to use for a baby boy?
2. Did the idea of painting a compass on the medallion work? If not, what ideas do you have for that space that would work?
3. Do you think thick stripes on the sides would have been ok to paint?
4. Would it have been to busy if I had painted Cape Gabriel in a small curved banner above the boy's head?

I stumbled upon this very interesting online article published by New Scientist this afternoon that really caught my attention like no other. Since my father has cancer, knowing more about possible cures helps me cope. I hope this article can provide new hope for those that have or know someone who has Cancer. It looks like there's more to the drug, dichloroacetate (DCA), than we thought. Is it really possible to have a cure for most cancer's already and be able to provide the pills to the public at an affordable price? That would be a true miracle! New Scientist has received an unprecedented amount of interest in this story from readers. If you would like up-to-date information on any plans for clinical trials of DCA in patients with cancer, or would like to donate towards a fund for such trials, please visit the site set up by the University of Alberta and the Alberta Cancer Board. We will also follow events closely and will report any progress as it happens.

It sounds almost too good to be true: a cheap and simple drug that kills almost all cancers by switching off their "immortality". The drug, dichloroacetate (DCA), has already been used for years to treat rare metabolic disorders and so is known to be relatively safe.

It also has no patent, meaning it could be manufactured for a fraction of the cost of newly developed drugs.

Evangelos Michelakis of the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, and his colleagues tested DCA on human cells cultured outside the body and found that it killed lung, breast and brain cancer cells, but not healthy cells. Tumours in rats deliberately infected with human cancer also shrank drastically when they were fed DCA-laced water for several weeks.

DCA attacks a unique feature of cancer cells: the fact that they make their energy throughout the main body of the cell, rather than in distinct organelles called mitochondria. This process, called glycolysis, is inefficient and uses up vast amounts of sugar.

Until now it had been assumed that cancer cells used glycolysis because their mitochondria were irreparably damaged. However, Michelakis's experiments prove this is not the case, because DCA reawakened the mitochondria in cancer cells. The cells then withered and died (Cancer Cell, DOI: 10.1016/j.ccr.2006.10.020).

Michelakis suggests that the switch to glycolysis as an energy source occurs when cells in the middle of an abnormal but benign lump don't get enough oxygen for their mitochondria to work properly (see diagram). In order to survive, they switch off their mitochondria and start producing energy through glycolysis.

Crucially, though, mitochondria do another job in cells: they activate apoptosis, the process by which abnormal cells self-destruct. When cells switch mitochondria off, they become "immortal", outliving other cells in the tumour and so becoming dominant. Once reawakened by DCA, mitochondria reactivate apoptosis and order the abnormal cells to die.

"The results are intriguing because they point to a critical role that mitochondria play:
they impart a unique trait to cancer cells that can be exploited for cancer therapy," says Dario Altieri, director of the University of Massachusetts Cancer Center in Worcester.

The phenomenon might also explain how secondary cancers form. Glycolysis generates lactic acid, which can break down the collagen matrix holding cells together. This means abnormal cells can be released and float to other parts of the body, where they seed new tumours.

DCA can cause pain, numbness and gait disturbances in some patients, but this may be a price worth paying if it turns out to be effective against all cancers. The next step is to run clinical trials of DCA in people with cancer. These may have to be funded by charities, universities and governments: pharmaceutical companies are unlikely to pay because they can't make money on unpatented medicines. The pay-off is that if DCA does work, it will be easy to manufacture and dirt cheap.

Paul Clarke, a cancer cell biologist at the University of Dundee in the UK, says the findings challenge the current assumption that mutations, not metabolism, spark off cancers. "The question is: which comes first?" he says.

Since there was rain today, we had to pass on the traditional Memorial BBQ so we went out to eat at a steak house {and WOW was it delicious!} We arrived back home just before the sun was going down and my husband couldn't wait to put together his new BBQ that we had purchased earlier in the day. The kids decided that they'd go outside and play since Dan was out there with his BBQ, which was perfect timing as the rain had finally let up. I was at our table painting and catching up on some programs that I had recorded on our DVR when my sweet little Amanda Grace came up to me with these beautiful freshly picked pink and white flowers from our garden. "Mommy, I picked these especially for you. They are as pretty as you are!", gave me a kiss and a hug and ran back outside to finish playing before the sun went completely down. Oh my.... This made my heart melt! It's moments like this that make me appreciate my kids more than ever. When they leave us with small gestures that mean the world to us, they leave precious heart-prints that last a lifetime. Thank you my sweet, sweet Amanda Grace, I love you too.....forever.

Things I Heart....I la'love how creative people can be. It is such a gift.

1. Cover bowls or dishes when cooking in the microwave.Coffee filters make excellent covers.

2. Clean windows and mirrors. Coffee filters are lint-free so they’ll leave windows sparkling.

3. Protect ChinaSeparate your good dishes by putting a coffee filter between each dish.

4. Filter broken cork from wine. If you break the cork when opening a wine bottle, filter the wine through a coffee filter.

5. Protect a cast-iron skillet. Place a coffee filter in the skillet to absorb moisture and prevent rust.

6. Apply shoe polish. Ball up a lint-free coffee filter.

7. Recycle frying oil. After frying, strain oil through a sieve lined with a coffee filter.

8. Weigh chopped foods. Place chopped ingredients in a coffee filter on a kitchen scale.

9. Hold tacos. Coffee filters make convenient wrappers for messy foods.

10. Stop the soil from leaking out of a plant pot. Line a plant pot with a coffee filter to preventthe soil from going through the drainage holes.

11. Prevent a Popsicle from dripping. Poke one or two holes as needed in a coffee filter.

12. Do you think we used expensive strips to wax eyebrows? Use strips of coffee filters.

13. Put a few in a plate and put your fried bacon, French fries, chicken fingers, etc on them.Soaks out all the grease.

14. Keep in the bathroom. They make great “razor nick fixers.”

Oh yeah, they are also great to use in your coffee makers!

Before winter came we made one last run to the Brookfield Zoo before the weather got to cold. This is one park that we tend to purchase Annual Passes to so we take our time and really look at everything. On our last trip we had so much fun and started seeing more than we had before. We started noticing how vibrant some of the animals colors were, how the moved around, played, ate, etc. We took it all in so to speak. Our family had a few favorites and below are pictures of those animals that were our top picks. Click on any picture to enlarge them.

First on our list was the Dolphine Show. This was exciting, interactive and fun to watch! Dolphines are truly amazing!

Hundreds turned out to watch crews dye the Chicago River

a deep shade of green.
(Back in 1961, officials started using dye to turn the water green.)

The dye used by this year's crew was actually orange, but once it soaked

into the river it changed from orange to green. Cool, right?

Have plans on Monday night? Well, you do now! Dust off your crafty pants and come join us for our weekly Craft Night at the Etsy Labs in Brooklyn. Craft Night occurs every Monday from 4-8pm EST at 325 Gold Street, 3rd floor in Brooklyn, New York. Craft Night is a time to make things, learn new skills, and hang out.This week, on Monday, February 23, we're hosting an open Craft Night, as we do on the last Monday of each month! Instead of an organized project, this week we are throwing the doors of the Etsy Labs wide open and letting you work on any project that catches your fancy. Bring along any project to work on during this week's Craft Night: that half-finished scarf you are knitting, paper you would like to bind into books, an embroidery-in-progress, a skirt you would like to alter, a jewelry project... Or, start a new project during Craft Night. The sky's the limit.

If you need help with a project that you are working on, we are happy to put in our two cents and share our expertise. If you learned a skill in a past Craft Night or class, here is your chance to develop that skill further. As always, our tools and supplies are available, so join us for a crafty free-for-all.

These Valentine Goodies are not only easy to make, they are oh so delicious! Enjoy!

Truffle Brownies

Refrigerate, covered, for up to two days. Bring to room temperature before serving. You can also make the brownies in a buttered eight-inch square baking pan lined with foil or parchment paper.

Makes about 1 dozen
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, plus more for pan
3 ounces good-quality unsweetened chocolate, coarsely chopped
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup sugar
2 large eggs
1/4 cup milk
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
4 ounces good-quality semisweet chocolate, coarsely chopped
2/3 cup heavy cream
Heart-shaped sprinkles, for garnish

Directions
1) Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Butter a 9-inch springform pan, and set aside.
2) Make batter: Put butter and chocolate in a heatproof medium bowl set over a pan of simmering water; stir until melted. Let cool slightly.
3) Whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt in a separate bowl; set aside.
4) Put sugar and eggs in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, and beat on medium speed until pale and fluffy, about 4 minutes. Add chocolate mixture, milk, and vanilla, and beat until combined. Add flour mixture; beat, scraping down sides of bowl, until well incorporated.
5) Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake until a cake tester inserted into brownies (avoid center and edges) comes out with a few crumbs but is not wet, 27 to 30 minutes. Let cool completely in pan.
6) Make topping when brownies are cool: Put chocolate in a medium bowl. Heat cream in a small saucepan over medium-high heat until just simmering. Pour over chocolate; let stand 5 minutes. Gently stir until smooth. Allow ganache to cool, stirring every 10 minutes, until slightly thickened, 25 to 30 minutes.
7) Pour ganache over cooled brownies in pan; let set, about 20 minutes. Refrigerate until cold, 30 minutes to 1 hour. Let brownies stand at room temperature at least 15 minutes before serving. Lift out brownies; cut into wedges, wiping knife with a hot, damp cloth between each cut. Scatter sprinkles on top.

Chocolate Strawberry Heart-Shaped Ice-Cream Sandwiches

Makes 24
2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
1/2 cup cocoa powder
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
12 tablespoons (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 large eggs
1 tablespoon milk
2 to 2 1/2 pints strawberry ice cream, slightly softened

Directions
1) In a medium bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt; set aside. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream butter, vanilla, and sugar. Add eggs and milk, and mix until combined. Add reserved flour mixture, and mix on low speed until incorporated, scraping the sides of the bowl with a spatula at least once. Divide the dough in half, and shape each half into a flat disk. Wrap each disk in plastic wrap, and chill until firm, about 1 hour.
2) Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Roll dough out on a lightly floured surface; use an offset spatula to unstick the dough every few turns of the rolling pin. Roll dough to an 1/8-inch thickness. Cut dough using a variety of heart-shaped cookie cutters from 2 1/2 to 3 inches in diameter, making sure there is a top and bottom cookie for each sandwich. Place hearts on a parchment-lined baking sheet; chill until firm, about 30 minutes. Remove from refrigerator; use a fork to prick holes all over the surface of the cookies. Bake until firm, 12 to 15 minutes. Let cool slightly on baking sheet, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
3) Using half the cookies, spoon softened strawberry ice cream about 1/2 inch thick on each underside. Place matching cookie on top of ice cream, top-side facing out. Transfer immediately to freezer to harden; repeat with remaining ingredients. Serve directly from the freezer. Sandwiches can be stored in an airtight container in the freezer for 3 to 4 days.

Pink Meringue Drops

Makes 16 dozen drops
4 large egg whites, room temperature
1 cup sugar
1 pinch cream of tartar
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Pink food coloring
6 ounces semisweet or bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped
2 teaspoons canola oil or pure vegetable shortening

Directions
1) Preheat oven to 200 degrees with two racks centered. Line four baking sheets with parchment paper. Fill a medium saucepan 1/4 full with water. Set the saucepan over medium heat, and bring water to a simmer.
2) In the heatproof bowl of an electric mixer, combine egg whites, sugar, and cream of tartar, and place over the saucepan of simmering water. Whisk constantly until sugar is dissolved and whites are warm to the touch, 3 to 3 1/2 minutes. Test by rubbing between your fingers.
3) Transfer bowl to electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment; whip, starting on low speed and gradually increasing to high, until soft peaks form, about 5 minutes. Add vanilla and just a few drops of food coloring; beat to combine, and continue beating until stiff peaks form.
4) Fill a piping bag fitted with a 1/2-inch tip with the meringue. Pipe 3/4- to 1-inch drops onto prepared baking sheet; after each drop is piped by squeezing the bag, release from squeezing, and pull straight up with the bag to create the very fine curled tip on each drop. Bake until drops are hard to the touch but not browned, about 1 1/2 hours. Repeat to use all meringue. Meringue drops may be made a day ahead and kept in an airtight container at room temperature.
5) Melt chocolate in a heat-proof bowl, or the top of a double boiler, set over a pan of simmering water, stirring occasionally. Stir in the oil or shortening until well combined. Dip the bottom of each cooled meringue drop into the melted chocolate; stick two together if desired. Turn upside down on a cooling rack, and let chocolate harden -- this can take up to 50 minutes at room temperature -- or just freeze on parchment paper for 5 minutes. Serve.

These crepe-paper wraps, inspired by amaryllis petals, can dress up the pots of any plants you give as presents.

Oh my.....this is beautiful!

Colored Paper Cones
Cones can be cut from plain colored paper or from greeting cards. To create, draw an arc onto a corner of the construction paper or card using a compass opened up as wide as it can go. Using a pair of pinking shears, cut inside the line. Roll the paper into a cone and staple; reinforce with tape along the inside seam. To decorate a plain paper cone, draw an oval (we used a stencil from an art-supply store) around a chosen image from a greeting card, and cut just inside the line with pinking shears. Glue the cutout to the front of the cone. Punch a hole on both sides of the cone, thread a ribbon through, and knot the ends.

Tower of Boxes
Several boxes are stacked and tied up in two giant ribbons. Each box is wrapped first in colored tissue paper, then frosted over with a sheet of glassine, available by the sheet or roll from archival-supply houses.

Gotta love the 'tower' look!

Candy Wrapping
Dress packages in candy stripes for a sweet presentation. Use double-sided tape to secure the end of a length of ribbon to the bottom of a wrapped package. Wind around box, spacing stripes evenly; thread a tag through the free end of the ribbon. Finish by affixing ribbon underneath the box with double-sided tape. Repeat with ribbons in different widths or colors.

Downhill Skiing Snowmen

To make this downhill racer, start with a standard three-ball tower. Once the snowman's body is fully constructed, slip a pair of skis under the base snowball. Use apple slices for ears, a carrot for a nose and a row of radishes for a mouth, held in place with toothpicks (as shown).

To achieve a windblown look, support a hat and scarf with a wire coat hanger (or sticks) and add a shock of evergreen bough hair. Press a pair of snow goggles into the snowman's head with the strap left inside. Add sticks for the snowman's arms, with ski poles placed in the branches.

Use the same materials and technique to construct a smaller snow child. Give the child a cardboard sign, protected from the elements with clear Con-Tact paper.

Frosty the Cupcake

Snow or no snow, your family can whip up a band of these merry marshmallow snowmen to satisfy all their winter wonderland fantasies.

RECIPE INGREDIENTS:
Cooled cupcake (baked from your favorite recipe)
White icing
Large marshmallows
Waxed paper
Pretzel sticks
Decorators' gel
Orange slice candy
Junior Mints
Thin Mints
Fruit leather

1. Frost a cooled cupcake (baked from your favorite recipe) with white icing.

2. Flatten a large marshmallow on waxed paper with the palm of your hand. Cut a second marshmallow in half horizontally, then stack the halves on the first marshmallow to form a torso and head.

3. Push a thin pretzel stick down through the snowman (this will help him stand up), then set him on the cupcake. 4. Use decorators' gel to create a mouth, eyes, and buttons, then add pretzel stick arms and a wedge cut from an orange slice candy for a nose.

5. Accessorize with a candy hat (a Junior Mint secured to a Thin Mint with icing) and a fruit leather scarf. Watch a step-by-step video demonstration of this recipe.

Crunchy the Snowman

Dressed in colorful candy scarves and top hats, these stylish, easy-to-make snowmen are sure to liven up any holiday gathering.

RECIPE INGREDIENTS:
bag of 8-inch pretzel rods
1 cup white chocolate chips
mini chocolate chips
orange decorators' gel
fruit leather (various colors)
gummy rings
gumdrops

1. To make a batch, melt 1 cup of white chocolate chips in the top of a double boiler.

2. One at a time, dip one end of an 8-inch pretzel rod in the melted chocolate and use a plastic spoon or knife to spread the chocolate two thirds of the way down the rod.

3. Set the pretzels on a sheet of waxed paper and press on mini chocolate chips for eyes and buttons. Use orange decorators' gel to add a carrot nose. 4. When the chocolate has hardened, stand the pretzels in a mug or glass and tie on strips of fruit leather for scarves. For each hat, stretch a gummy ring over the narrow end of a gumdrop and secure it on the pretzel rod with a dab of melted chocolate.
