We have a new addition to our family!

She's a German Shepherd, about 10 weeks old, and her name is Maggie. She is cute as ever and a ball of energy! We just love her!

Any advise is GREATLY appreciated on every subject.
One question that comes to mind.....how do I get her to stop chasing and rough housing with my two cats?? Yikes! I try to get her to sit and tell her "no cats" but so far, no luck. :-( Will her chasing end as she gets older?

We had a German Shepherd/Shar Pei mix. She was 13 when we had to have her put to sleep. Her name was Keesha.

Shepherds have problems with their hips. We gave ours a glucosamine supplement. Ask your vet what is best.

Her shepherd side was her dominant personality. You have to show them you are boss from the start. Shepherds are very protective, but they are also very guarded and they protect their perceived turf.

Ours was very obedient and she was so smart it was scary. She just knew all kinds of things.

She once stopped an intruder from coming in our apartment, so of course she will always have a special place in my heart.

Hope this was helpful,
Katie

Awwww! She is adorable and German Shepherds are my favorite. Sadly, we put our oldest (13 years) to sleep yesterday and we are so sad. We still have a 3 year old female though. Have you ever had a Shepherd? They're fantastic dogs. Cute pics :)

OH man, my absolute favorite breed! I've got a 5 year old♥
I would strongly suggest obedience school. With any dog, but especially large breeds. It will go SO much smoother if you do this. And get the pup exposed to people and other animals early on. Take her out and about where there's activity. They will learn to accept one and all and not be over protective. Not to worry, your dog will always protect you when needed, but if you socialize her early on, she'll be a wonderful pet that friends and family won't fear.
Wishing you the best of luck! I wish I had room for many of these wonderful animals!!

Hi Audra,
She's adorable! Don't worry, she'll calm down as she learns and as she gets older. She will probably be pretty playful and super energetic until she grows out of her puppy stage (which is about 2 years - so you have a ways to go.) But, the good news is, she will also learn fairly quickly as long as you are extremely consistent in your training. German Shepherds are smart dogs, so I'm sure she'll be fine. I doubt you'll ever get her to completely leave the cats alone, but her playing with them will diminish the more you guys play/walk her. In other words, if you tire her out doing other things, she won't have as much energy to bug the cats. Just be consistent and when she does do good, be sure to praise and give her a treat. Good luck!

What an adorable post that I've stumbled upon.

We put our old shepherd boy down last month. He was such a part of our family...I'm teary as I write this, haha.

Okay. So, here's my suggestion (and it taught our dog to stop chasing and killing squirrels). One thing to know about these dogs is, they really, really love to please. They want to see you happy with them. We would take Shultz on walks, and every time he'd see a squirrel and get in pre-stalking mode, we'd give his leash a gentle but firm tug to get his attention. Once we had his attention, we told him he was a good boy and treated him. After about a consistent week of this, he wouldn't look at squirrels with interest. The thing about it was though, when he'd see a squirrel, he'd look at us for a treat (because these dogs are so smart) and of course, he'd get treats while walking after his squirrel aggression ended.

I'd suggest exercising your puppy first so he's not as hyper. I'd then practice bringing the cats near him while he's under your control. Keep his attention on you while the cats are nearby and treat him.

Obedience classes are a great way to build a relationship first before moving on to other training. You need that relationship established with these dogs first before you can do other things like this. Besides, the classes are a lot of fun, for you and your dog.

Progress updates will be expected, with lots and lots of photos!
